PetExportVet Hong Kong - IPATA - Dr Gerry Pahl 6 Tips to settle into a new home

1. PATIENCE

Be patient and provide reassurance

Moving to a new place can be stressful for pets, just as it is for humans. Give your pet time to become familiar to the new surroundings and provide them with plenty of love, attention, and reassurance during this period.

Patience is key!

2. SAFETY

Create a safe space

Designate a specific area in your new home where your pet can feel safe and secure. Fill it with comfortable bedding, familiar toys, and their favorite treats. This will provide them with a sense of familiarity and help ease their anxiety.

3. GO SLOW

Gradually introduce the new environment

Start by allowing your pet to explore one room at a time. Close off other areas of the house initially and gradually expand their access as they become more comfortable. This will prevent overwhelming them with too many new sights and smells all at once.

4. ROUTINE

Stick to a routine

Maintaining a consistent routine can help your pet feel more secure. Try to keep their feeding, playtime, and exercise schedules as close to their previous routine as possible. This will provide them with a sense of stability in their new environment.

5. OBSERVE

Keep a close eye on your pet's behavioUr during the first few days. Look for signs of stress, such as excessive hiding, loss of appetite, or unusual aggression. If you notice any concerning behavioUr, consult with a veterinarian who specialises in pet relocation for guidance.

6. Socialise gradually

If you have other pets or plan to introduce your pet to new animal companions, do so gradually and under supervision. Allow them to interact in a controlled and calm manner, providing positive reinforcement for good behaviour.

Pets are like humans we are all unique

Remember, every pet is unique, and their adjustment period may vary. Some pets may adapt quickly, while others may take more time. By following these 6 tips and showering your furry friend with love and patience, you will help them feel at home in their new surroundings.
