Most Hong Kong pet owners don't realise they need to start the export process 6 months before their move date. Here's everything you need to know — from someone who's done this over 1,000 times.
As a Pet Travel veterinarian and expert in global pet logistics, I know the challenges and concerns pet owners face when considering international travel with their furry companions. Whether you're moving to or from Hong Kong, ensuring a smooth transition for your pet requires careful planning and understanding of the processes involved. This guide will equip you with essential knowledge and expert tips to make pet export and import as stress-free as possible.
Understanding Pet Travel Regulations in Hong Kong
The Importance of Compliance
The Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) control the import and export of pets in and out of Hong Kong. They do not set the export requirements for pets travelling to other countries each country sets up their own import rules, mainly based on biosecurity/disease risks.
The AFCD has specific regulations governing the import of pets, primarily designed to prevent the introduction and spread of rabies and ensure animal welfare. Compliance with these regulations is critical to avoid delays or complications on arrival. Key requirements include microchipping, vaccinations, import permits and for those pets originating from rabies infected countries there will be mandatory quarantine on arrival.
A microchip is your pet's permanent ID and is crucial for international travel. Ensure your pet's microchip is ISO-compliant (15 digit). This step is not only a regulatory requirement but also provides peace of mind in case your pet gets lost.
Preparing for Pet Export from Hong Kong
Health Certificates, Vaccinations and blood tests
Before exporting your pet, PetExportVet will guide you on the specific requirements and preparation timeline. Timelines vary greatly between countries, and the rules are constantly changing. Our team at PetExportVet takes pride in our up-to-date knowledge on Global import rules.
The export health certificate for some countries is very complex and errors can be costly. We will ensure that all prepared export documents are accurate and that your pet is healthy and fit for travel. Additionally, we ensure all required vaccinations, especially rabies, are current and meet the destination country's requirements.
Choosing an Airline and Understanding Cargo Policies
Not all airlines have the same policies regarding pet travel. We guide you on choosing an airline with a good reputation for pet care and make sure their specific cargo policies fit with your plans. All airlines that offer the service of pets in cargo hold will ensure that the aircraft has the correct climate-controlled cargo environment, which are essential for your pet's comfort and safety.
Importing Pets into Hong Kong
Quarantine Requirements
Hong Kong's quarantine requirements apply to all countries considered rabies-infected. The AFCD is currently in the process of changing some countries over to the new Group IIIA category, which allows for a one-month quarantine rather than the old 4-month quarantine policy. Our consultants would be pleased to advise you further on these new developments.
Import Permits and Documentation
To import a pet into Hong Kong, you'll need an import permit, which must be applied for before your pet's arrival. Our team will gather all necessary documentation, including vaccination records, health certificates, and any additional permits required by Hong Kong authorities.
Tips for Stress-Free Pet Travel
